Yesterday, I wrote a post about the ‘alleged’ corruption with the Governors in my home state of Illinois. I got quite a few e-mails, comments and other feedback from this post. I encourage you to read some of the comments.
Probably the thing that stumps us all more than anything is that Governor Blagojevich has not resigned yet. You have to wonder why. Is he that blind to what is going on here? Does he feel that he has done nothing wrong? Is he just plain stupid?
He returned to work yesterday just as it was ‘business as usual’.
There are a few problems that have arisen from Blagojevich’s attitude.
First of all, people are looking very hard for an association between Blagojevich and Barack Obama. At this time, there is not link other than the fact that Obama and his people wanted nothing to do with Blagojevich. When Obama appeared in Springfield, Illinois to announce his Biden choice, Blagojevich, also a Dem, was no where to be found. Why was this?
Blagojevich has not been very popular with the downstate crowd. He spent little time in Springfield, the capitol and when he was first elected into office, it was widely said that his wife ‘very much’ wanted to stay in Chicago. Like there is something wrong with the clean air and honest people in downstate Illinois that helped elect him. The Illinois media outlets made no hesitation in presenting the costs of transporting the Gov between Chicago and Springfield as a result. And, there is the state fair snub where the Gov decided to break the tradition of kicking the fair off as grand marshall of the parade. Yes, a state fair may seem lame to urbanits but, it means a lot the agricultural crowd.
People in Illinois are use to hearing about the rifts between the Gov and the Springfield politicians- from all parties. It seems like every time there is a session we shown arguing and calls for impeachment.
Obama and the open Senate Seat
So now the the Illinois General Assembly will begin a special session on Monday to consider legislation that would create a special election to fill Barak Obama’s seat until 2010. However, However, Blagojevich, who remains the state’s sitting governor, could veto anybill. The legislature would then have to vote to override his veto if the special election is to go forward. And, if the Gov appoints someone to fill Obama’s empty senate seat, the U.S. Senate could refuse to seat Blagojevich’s senate-designee.
According to CNN,Obama also called for Blagojevich’s resignation.
“The president-elect agrees with Lt. Gov. Quinn and many others that under the current circumstances it is difficult for the governor to effectively do his job and serve the people of Illinois,’ said Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs.
What is it that Blagojevich doesn’t get?
Is he arrogant, blind or just not that smart?
This mess is telling us something. Is it politics as usual?
