The good news is that it ushered out the Unofficial St. Patricks Day weekend binge at the local university here. I wrote about this yesterday and received many comments and emails. So, here is an update.
The 13-year-old event began Thursday night is known among the college aged set as a two-day drinking binge across Campustown. It draws both local students and out-of-town partygoers.
A group of volunteers representing several organizations including Students for Environmental Concern spent Saturday morning collecting at least 150 pounds of aluminum cans from various locations. The cans were donated to a nonprofit organization that plans to use the cans to make solar-powered heaters for low-income families.
According to local reports, by 5:45 a.m. Saturday, police had issued 267 citations – 103 were for public possession of alcohol and 106 were for underage drinking. There have been no reports so far (our news is pretty much second-rate in comparison to ‘big city’ newscasting) about the final tallies of injuries, arrests, and even revenue. I can say that the unofficial is officially over.
In another update….Oprah has a message to Rihanna….I hope she listens to it.
And….tell your grandmother not to invite strange men into her house if she lives in Saudi Arabia.
A Saudi Arabian court has sentenced a 75-year-old Syrian woman to 40 lashes, four months imprisonment and deportation from the kingdom for having two unrelated men in her house, according to local media reports.
According to one of them men, he was somewhat of a relative because she had breast-fed him as a baby and was therefore considered to be a son to her in Islam. The other man, his friend, was escorting him as he delivered bread for the elderly woman. The policeman then arrested both men.
The court also doled out punishment to the two men. One was sentenced to four months in prison and 40 lashes. The other was sentenced to six months in prison and 60 lashes.
I’m guessing that they must have one heck of an economy if they can afford to send crap like this through their court system. Beating up an old woman is just not cool. I’m not sure any religion could, should or would justify this.
