Harvey died surrounded by family at a hospital in a hospital in Phoenix. No cause of death was immediately available.
His career, made famous with”the rest of the story”, spanned more than 70 years. Harvey had been forced off the air for several months in 2001 because of a virus that weakened a vocal cord. But he returned to work in Chicago and was still active as he passed his 90th birthday. His death comes less than a year after that of his wife and longtime producer, Lynne.
Paul Harvey received the Medal of Freedom from President Bush in 2005.
Harvey began his radio career in 1933 at KVOO-AM in Tulsa, Oklahoma, there while he was still in high school. Harvey’s broadcasts were heard on more than 1,200 radio stations and 400 Armed Forces networks and his commentaries appeared in 300 newspapers, according to his Web site.
