Tips on Planning a Vegetable Garden from the folks at Scotts;
Planning a Vegetable Garden

Nothing matches the delicious taste of vegetables harvested fresh from your own garden. They’re delicious to eat and fun to watch as they grow. Also, let’s not forget about certain bragging rights in the neighborhood. You can even grow succulent vegetables in containers or window boxes.

Location

Location is a key consideration when planning your garden. Vegetables are sun-worshippers, and love sunny, open spaces in order to thrive. Look for a spot that provides at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day. More would be better.

Choosing Your Vegetables

What kind of garden you make depends on what you like to eat. Are salads big in your family? Or is your household full of corn-on-the-cob connoisseurs? Decide on your must-have vegetables, then consider your space. When you’re satisfied that you have enough room for the vegetables you want, you’re ready to get started. One note: try to avoid planting more than your family can eat.

Lay Out the Garden

First, make sure your garden looks good on paper. Make a sketch of your garden, drawing little circles to represent your vegetable plants. Use the spacing recommended in the catalog description as a guide. Now you have a planting plan. For a step-by-step guide to planting, see the Planting a Vegetable Garden project.

This is what my proposed vegetable garden looked like last weekend.
I have some cleaning up to do, obviously.
I use to plant a lot of stuff but, have not done so in a few years.
The trick for me is making it rabbit- proof. I always use marigolds but, sometimes they’ll
even eat those. Silly wabbits.

So, what are your weekend garden plans?

I would love to have a garden but we rent. Hopefully when we get our own house I can make me a big beautiful garden.

my garden looks exactly the same as it did last weekend…with the exception of a failed soaker hose experiment that my husband was intent on..i will be busting his hump and posting on that one later

I hope you appreciate I was out at 6am taking that photo of the compost bin!

I purposely did not take any photos of the newly expanded garden bed because Anastasia promised to get up early and start working on it. Her version of early and mine are clearly different. (She’s still not up.)

I really need to get the containers for transplanting my seedlings. And soil as well. We’ll see how much gets done tomorrow, though. I have a dinner party tonight and I imagine I won’t get to bed till late.

I really need to get a jumpstart on my garden since its over-run by weeds. Maybe I’ll be motivated this weekend to give it a go–but I know me, I keep putting it off. . .

We love gardening …
We live in Iowa for God’s sake!
It’s like a law or something -
Just kidding :-)
But we really do love gardening.
We put in our tomato plants.
Also our green, yellow, and sweet banana pepper plants.
And tomorrow I am putting in our seeds.
Lots of stuff.
And boy oh boy do we compost.
It’s like the best for healthy and productive plants.
It’s fun to dig in the dirt!!!
