As far as the hot dog thing goes my sister actually took it a step further with my nephews. She cuts the hot dog down the middle and then cuts it into bite sized pieces. Needless to say, the three year old's hot dog winds up so small it's partically microscopic. It's like the size of a tiny cracker but seeing as he has issues with swallowing food, Generally, two or three pieces at at time if you're not paying attention, then I guess she's onto something!
