Are you a sex addict???
What kind of a question is this? I just read it on CNN.com and it threw me. First of all, I have worked with and known addicted people. Can there really be an addiction for sex? Is there a logical excuse for the behavior of certain individuals that many of us encountered in college? OR, is this sex addiction thing just another excuse for celebs such as Michael Douglas, Charlie Sheen, and of course, Tiger?
Here is what the article ‘expert’ has to say.
Some general ways to know you might have crossed the line from healthy sexual interest to sexual addiction or compulsion:
1. You lie
No. 1 way you know you’ve crossed the line: when you make up stories to get sex.
“If you lie with women to get them to have sex with you, you’re a predator and an addict,”
2. Sex consumes you
If your interest in sex runs your life, you have a problem, says Robert Weiss, a social worker and founder of the Sexual Recovery Institute. He says addicts “are always preoccupied with hitting on someone, or picking someone up, or getting home to look at porn before their spouse comes home.”
3. You’re “divorced, dead, fired or arrested”
If you continue your sexual activities even under threat of being “divorced, dead, fired or arrested,” you’re an addict, Parker says.
“They ignore the consequences,” Weiss adds. “They say, ‘I could really screw up myself here, but I’m going to continue to do it.’ ”
4. You have an intense interest in pornography
“The pornography piece of this cannot be overstated,” Parker says. “Show me a guy who’s having sex with three women in one week, and I promise you he has a relationship with pornography.”
5. You want to stop and you can’t
Sexual addiction is defined by a loss of control, Weiss says.
What do you think?
Is there a possible illness know as Sex Addiction? If so, Should insurance cover the treatment of these addictions? or Is this just crazy talk?

Welcome to The Dating Profiles Meme. This meme is based on a feature from WTIT: The Blog authored by Bud Weiser. This is a bit different than an “answer this question” meme. Either you have used sites such as Match.com or Yahoo Personals or you’ve read them. Weekly, we scour those on-line dating sites to respond either a person’s profile or often their headlines as most of us would really like to do. We use only “lines” that are gender-neutral. So, your mission is to respond to ten we choose each week. Seriously or with humor is your choice! The spelling or grammar errors were in the original profiles. Join us each and every Friday!
Why do I do this silly meme?
Besides being addicted to memes, and feeling sorry for Bud
, this meme gives me the opportunity to say what’s on my mind to this fictitional individual/loser. Check it out

Maybe those daters should look for the sex addicts.

I think sex addition = selfishness.
Its just another excuse for self centered behavior, and remember we all have a choice. Even if the person has a overactive sex drive they can still choose to act on it or not.
What happened to self control?

Here’s my Aloha Friday link for you
Now to your AF question, No I do not think insurance should cover them, Heck that insurance would even cover Bi-Polar or mental disorders, so why should they cover the sex offenders.

I just knew that you thought you were perfect!
Thanks for playing…
I believe that sex addiction is probably a true issue like other addictions. With that said there is a limit on what insurance companies are going to pay for. Right now anything for mental health or physical therapy is limited for people while premiums keep going sky high.

wow moving to wordpress what makes you want to start paying for hosting? Just curious.
NOPE not addicted to sex. I have never lied to a women to get her to have sex with me…now a man…maybe..does that count it wasn’t mentioned in the article
I really don’t know if it is real or not. Years ago people thought claiming “a compulsive liar” was not something that needed treated…..I think if you have a problem controlling yourself in WHATEVER area and there is a program to help you then take it. As for the insurance? I don’t know…..I really don’t

Following you back from Friday Follow. I agree with the sex addiction thing. I always wondered about that. I’m a counselor but I’m not sure I could work with sex addicts. I think I would have to hide my silly giggle at some of their remarks…LOL. Just being honest!
Hmmm… I’m not really sure. It sounds like crazy talk to me but I guess people thought that about alcohol or drug addiction too. So, tell me about this follow friday thing – what is it?

Hmmm…I don’t know if it’s an actual illness or not, but I definitely don’t think it should be covered by insurance. There are people who have real illnesses who don’t get their medical costs covered. But life is weird and unfair and with all the publicity he’s giving this “condition”, who knows.

LOL…maybe a boat perhaps? LOL. I don’t know if I believe in Sex Addition. I think it’s just another way that doctors and pharmacies make money if you ask me. Pffft. You just can’t let Jon go can you. And guess what I read. Kate is going to be on Dancing With The Stars this season. Well at least it’s a possibility.
Have a great Friday

Aloha!
The media will say anything that they can to get people to tune into their crap! I never noticed it whenever I was younger, but as I grow up, I realize that most of the media = stupid.
I suppose that you can be addicted to sex, but you can also be addicted to soda, candy, BLOGGING, and other things. It doesn’t make you a bad person – it doesn’t mean that you need to be hospitalized – and it doesn’t mean that the media should eat you up & spit you out.
Great question, though!
I believe sex can become an addiction like most things that give you a high or release endorphins…drugs, alcohol, even shopping and stealing do this.
I’m already a follow of yours
Happy FF!

I don’t think it should be covered by insurance. It would just set precedence for people who have other types of addictions to seek compensation and some people would abuse the system. I enjoy your blog and have given you a blog award. You can check it out on my blog.

I’m not sure how to categorize it. I think you can get addicted to pretty much anything. I’m addicted to drinking mountain dew. Do I need a special therapy for it? Will insurance cover my visits? Hmm…

Sex addiction. Huh. For someone like Tiger, I think it’s more like “Hey, I’m Tiger Woods! I can screw anyone I want to!” than an actual addiction. I mean, really. I’m addicted to sugar free hard candies. Perhaps I need therapy.

sex addiction. it’s real. but certainly more involved than the media nonsense surrounding TW. Don’t believe it?
The National Council on Sexual Addiction Compulsivity estimated that 6%-8% of Americans are sex addicts, which is 18 million – 24 million people.
25 million Americans visit cyber-sex sites between 1-10 hours per week. Another 4.7 million in excess of 11 hours per week. (MSNBC/Stanford/Duquesne Study, Washington Times, 1/26/2000)
Researchers at Stanford and Duquesne universities claim at least 200,000 Americans are addicted to E-porn. (Koerner, Brendan I. “A Lust for Profits.” U.S. News online. 3/27/2000)
One out of every 6 women struggles with an addiction to pornography. (Today’s Christian Woman, September/October 2003)
Sex is the #1 searched for topic on the Internet (Dr. Robert Weiss, Sexual Recovery Institute, Washington Times, 1/26/2000)
and these stats are old….the numbers are higher.
I personally knew 5 people in sex addiction treatment who committed suicide.
It’s real. As alcoholism is not about alcohol and drug addiction is not about drugs and food addiction is not about food and gambling addiction is not about money….sex addiction is not about sex. It’s about numbing pain, checking out. It’s about not being able to face past traumas or dysfunctional family systems.
does any of this excuse behavior? absolutely not. any addict of any type in recovery knows that taking personal responsibility for your actions is key. It’s not about blame, it’s not about excuses. It’s about facing the pain, letting it go and finding a system of living life on life’s terms, in this case the 12 steps.
I thought I was already following you! Well I check and wasn’t and now I am a new follower!
I do think there is sex addiction. It’s when someone wants to keep that awesome feeling that they get during sex/climax and will have sex with anyone to get and keep that feeling going. The brain wants it ..it’s like when someone can’t stop drinking and they actually think they have control over it. Chemical imbalance maybe?
However I dont think that’s something that should be covered under insurance. I could be wrong.
