13 (Some Useless?) Leap Year Facts
1.
Leap years are necessary because the actual length of a year is 365.242 days, not 365 days.
2.
Our calendar, the Gregorian calendar is said to have been based on the Julian calendar. The Julian calendar featured a 12-month, 365-day year, with a day inserted every fourth year at the end of February to make an average year of 365.25 days.
3.
On years that are evenly divisible by four (like 1992, for example) an extra day is added to the calendar on Feb. 29.
4.
A leap year is a year containing one additional day in order to keep the calendar year synchronized with the astronomical or seasonal year.
5.
A leap year also also known as an intercalary or bissextile year.
6.
A year that is not a leap year is called a common year.
7.
Since the year is slightly less than 365.25 days long, adding an extra day every four years results in about three extra days being added over a period of 400 years.
8.
February 29 is commonly known as leap day.
9.
Adding an extra day to the calendar every four years compensates for the fact that a period of 365 days is shorter than a solar year by almost 6 hours.
10.
The Hebrew calendar adds a 13th lunar month seven times every 19 years to the twelve lunar months to keep its calendar year from drifting through the seasons too rapidly.
11.
Century years (like 1900 and 2000) are only considered leap years if they are evenly divisible by 400.
12.
A person born on February 29 may be called a “leapling” or a “leaper”
13
Famous People Born on Leap Day include, Dinah Shore 1917, James Mitchell 1920 (Palmer Courtland), Dennis Farina, and Anthony Robbins.

I’ll have to tell my friend whose b-day is the 29th that there’s an actual name for that. Thanks for sharing!
